FRANCE POITOU-CHARENTE CHARENTE MARITIME arènes de Saintes

Saintes (pop 27,900) is located on the Charente riverbanks and was once a bustling Roman town. Some ruins from this era, such as the colossal amphitheatre [Rue Lacurie, +33 546977385 Free], still lie well-preserved within this town. Built in 40 AD, this 60m long structure is now partially engulfed by the surrounding valley; however its ancient partitions and bleachers still remain visible.

Other historic areas in Saintes include the old town district that is generously sprinkled with medieval houses, as well as the triumphant Arc of Germanicus [Place Bassompierre, Free] - which was built between 18 and 19AD, at the end of a Roman bridge. It was saved and rebuilt a few meters from its original location, when the bridge was demolished in the 19th century.
