FRANCE POITOU-CHARENTE CHARENTE Chassenon Cassinomagus village

Chassenon (pop 909) is a small town that was once a thriving Gallo-Roman village [+33 545893221 http://amis.chassenon.free.fr] called Cassinomagus. This otherwise nondescript town has managed to preserve an entire complex of the Cassinomagus village in its heart- attracting a small yet steady stream of visitors, as well as archaeologists. The grey stone quarters of the ancient village is home to large monuments, an octagonal temple, an amphitheatre as well as public baths still intact. This village can only be visited on a guided tour, as it still functions as an active excavation site. Situated on the Agrippan Way, Cassinomagus was important enough to be mentioned on the Roman mediaeval Peutinger map.
