The small village of Longueval stands close to two important war memorials. The New Zealand Memorial that is dedicated to the New Zealand tank division, which stepped out to fight on 15th September 1916. Their contributions are recognised by the inscriptions on the memorial walls that bear the names of those who died here.

South African Memorial
The Delville Wood Memorial [5, route de Ginchy, +33 322850217 ] stands east of the village, in memory of the South African soldiers who lost their lives here, during the Battle of Somme. The memorial is dedicated to over 22 000 soldiers and bears the iconic statue of Kastor and Polydences taming a wild horse- signifying the two races in South Africa, tied with a common destiny.
