père lachaise cemeteryThe Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise [Admin Office: Rue de Repos, +33 155258210 www.pere-lachaise.com/] is one of the largest cemeteries in Paris and is certainly one of the most visited ones (thanks to its WWI memorial). A world of its own, the cemetery was established in 1804, but was not as popular as the surrounding cemeteries due to its location. However, tides turned when the crypts of popular names such as La Fontaine, Molière, Pierre Abélard and Héloise (a French philosopher and his lover, whose famous affair left him castrated and her- a forced nun) were shifted here. This was of course an effective marketing strategy, as today, the cemetery houses over 300 000 tombs. Many still clamour to be buried next to famous names like Jane Avril, Pierre Brasseur, Frédéric Chopin and Eugene Delacroix. It will be good to check out the website for popular grave locations before heading there.
