Gimel-les-Cascades

FRANCE LIMOUSIN CORREZZE Gimel les CascadesGimel-les-Cascades is a pretty village named after the majestic local waterfalls. The Cascades comprises of three falls that originate from the Montane River- the Grande Cascade (143m high, see photo), La Redole (25m high) and La Queue de Cheval (60m high), which is befittingly the icon and main draw of the village.


FRANCE LIMOUSIN CORREZZE Reliquary Gimel les CascadesAn historic reliquary displayed in the local church, Châsse de St-Étienne, which was made in Limoges in the 12th century; and the nearby Abbaye d’Aubazine [Le Bourg, +33 555846112. Guided tours available] (the remains a Cistercian abbey that was founded in the 12th century by the monk, St-Stephen). The abbey used to a popular site of pilgrimage, which was unfortunately destroyed during the Hundred Years War. Today, pieces of the abbey function as parish churches of Aubazine.


Gimel-les Cascades is usually a quaint village that is filled with flowery cottages and slate roof houses. It is popular with day trippers and its peak tourist season is in summer.
