FRANCE FRANCHE-COMTE JURA Baume-les-Messieurs - ancienne abbaye bénédictine

Baumes-les-Messieurs (pop 196) is a strikingly beautiful village that sits tucked in between three glacial valleys. The area’s red-tiled roofs stand out amidst the surrounding foliage and its main attraction is the abandoned Benedictine Abbaye Impériale [+33 384446141]. Founded in the 4th century, this abbey remained active until its disbandment in 1792. Today, it is entirely open to the public (Guided tours only).

South of the village lie some wonderful natural sites, such as the Grottes de Baume [call the office for guided tours +33 384482302]- a 30 million year old limestone cave with remarkable stalactites and stalagmites, and the Cascades du Hérisson, a fern-draped, cliff top waterfall that gushes all year round.
