FRANCE CHAMPAGNE HAUTE MARNE Marne RiverHaute-Marne is named after its location, close to the Marne River which runs a whole 120km course through the region, as well as the  relative altitude of significant parts of the department (hence the Haute part of the name). The department was created during the French Revolution from parts of the former Champagne, Burgundy, Lorriane and Franche-Comte provinces. It remained a cluster until the Germans segregated it into east and west sections, during the Second World War. The allied forces freed the department with this division in place as well. The Haute Marne department has a rich natural environment that is apt for hiking, biking and water activities like fishing and boating. It also has great cultural depth as it houses a few chateaux as well as other ancient structures.
