Cormatin (pop 524) is north of Cluny along an old railway path where the Voie Verte (car-free Greenway) unfolds.  Voie Verte  is a series of walking and biking trails that have been set up around the Sâone-et-Loire department linking you to the Voie de Vignes trail.

Cormatin is a usual pit stop for its opulent Château de Cormatin [+33 385501655 www.chateaudecormatin.com]. This dignified 17th century Renaissance structure stands tall amidst a lush, green park and a wide, rectangular moat. Built by the Marquises of Huxelles, the château’s opulent interiors are a sight to behold, as they comprise of gilded apartments that boast exquisite furnishings and detailing. The château’s landscaped park is also part of the castle’s charm. It is best to visit the château on a guided tour [ad/ch €9/4.50] that should be booked in advance.
