This slate-roofed, limestone building is renowned for its French Renaissance architecture and is enhanced by its quaint setting. The 16th-17th century castle stands encircled by a rectilinear moat and is guarded by cylindrical towers at all four corners. The exterior of the château is known for its intricate carvings while insiide you can visit the Grande Galerie, the main gallery hall that is filled with trompe l’œil works.

The village of Ancy-le-Franc (pop 1 000) is home to the Italian Renaissance castle, Château d’Ancy-le-Franc [+33 386751463,, ad/ch €9/6 or 13/8 (castle and park)]. Erected by the famous Sebastiano Serlio, an Italian mannerist architect, in the mid 16th century, the castle has an elaborate exterior that is guarded by a moat. The interior of the castle is exquisite and is accredited to the Italian artists who were brought into Fontainebleau by François I, as the castle was occupied by the mother of Diane de Poitiers. This grandiose structure gleams in the presence of the rural landscape that is dotted with stables and parks.
