Route des Cretes

FRANCE LORRAINE Route des CretesCreated by the French military during World War I in an effort to make transportation of troops and war materials more convenient, the Route des Cretes (Crest Road) has seen a revival in recent years as a tourist hotspot where unforgettable vistas wait for travellers who are willing to hike along its trails.  The 80 km road is also passable by car between its northern end at Col du Bonhomme, in Lorraine, and its southern end at Than, in Alsace.

Get yourself up to The Hohneck near the beginning of the route- a destination visible from afar with a quaint but imposing hut sitting on its summit (see above photo). The view offered is a spectacular melange of snaking lakes, earth-coloured trails and  expanses of greenery. The Grand Balloon summit is the highest point and gives sweeping views of the Vosges Massif.

FRANCE LORRAINE VOSAGES Chalet au sommet du HohneckThe Col de la Schulut is a great place for an extended stopover but note that it is popular with the locals during summer so don't be surprised by crowds. The Col du Herrenberg opens up fine views down to the Kruth Lake and Thur Valley, and you can take the chair lift up to the top of Montabey for a sweep of tree canopies stretching into the horizon.  The full-bodied flavour of Munster-Géromé is the acclaimed cheese of the region and also worth a try.  In winter, a ski station is set up with a variety of trails for those who bring their own equipment.
