SEINE-SAINT-DENIS

Standing north of the 18th arrondissement of Paris, St Denis (pop 102,000) is best known for being a royal necropolis for over 1200 years. Named after the bishop of Paris who was martyred on the Montmatre hill, the city was shortly known as Franciade during the French Revolution (as a sign of religious rejection). However, it got its original name back under the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte, in 1803. The city is worth a visit, despite its current suburbia façade, as it still has well-preserved remnants of its intriguing past.
